Fr. Manus Doherty  Council 4440 was founded June 22, 1957 at Our Lady of Victory Hall by State Deputy Oscar Rug. Gerald J McNearney was installed as the Council's first Grand Knight.

It is named after Fr. Manus Doherty, who was assigned to Our Lady of Victory Parish in 1959 and became the Chaplain of Council #4440. On April 13, 1960, Father Doherty was killed in an automobile accident on Highway 41 several miles south of Fresno. On June 22 1960, Gerald J Mc Nearney, then District Deputy, presented a resolution to Our Lady of Victory Council to change its name to Father Manus Doherty Council #4440. The resolution passed upon its second reading August 26, 1960, and the council became known as Father Manus Doherty Council #4440.

The Knights of Columbus Council #4440 works closely with the Our Lady of Victory Parish in Fresno, Ca, providing funds for various projects, members being active participants in their parish.

CHARITY, UNITY, FRATERNITY, AND PATRIOTISM
Knights of Columbus are Catholic gentlemen committed to the exemplification of charity, unity, fraternity, patriotism, and defense of the priesthood. The Order is consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Order is unequivocal in its loyalty to the Pope, the Vicar of Christ on earth. It is firmly committed to the protection of human life, from conception to natural death, and to the preservation and defense of the family. It was on these bedrock principles that the Order was founded over a century ago and remains true to them today.
